Our Lady of Aparecida, a history of faith

The faith of a people did the Saint the Brazil's Patron

The history of Our Lady of Conception Aparecida has its beginning for the middles of 1717, when it arrived the news that Conde of Assumar, D. Pedro of Almeida and Portugal, Governor of the County of São Paulo and Minas Gerais, he would go by the Villa of Guaratinguetá, on the way to Rich Villa, today city of Ouro Preto - MG. Summoned by the Camera of Guaratinguetá, the fishermen Domingos Garcia, Filipe Pedroso and João Alves left the search of fish in Paraíba River. They went down the river and nothing got. After many attempts without success, arrived in Port Itaguaçu.

João Alves threw the net in the waters and it caught the body of an image of Our Lady of Conception without the head. He threw the net again and it caught the head of the same image. Of there in before the fish arrived in abundance for the three humble fishermen. For 15 followed years, the image was with Felipe Pedroso's family, that took his home, where the people of the neighborhood met to pray.

The devotion went growing in the middle of the people and a lot of thanks were reached by those that prayed the image before. The family built an oratory, that soon became small. About 1734, the Vicar of Guaratinguetá built a Chapel in the high of the Hill of the Coconut trees, open to the public visitation. In 1834 it was initiate the construction of a larger Church (current Old Basilica).

The Image of Our Lady of Conception Aparecida, fished in the River Paraíba in the second fortnight of October of 1717, done of clay, that after having modeled, it is cooked in appropriate oven, measuring 40 height centimeters. The color of cinnamon that today it is known, it is due to the fact of having been exposed, during years, to the picumã of the flames of the candles and of the candeeiros. With passing of the time, the devotion Our Lady of Conception Aparecida went growing and the number of pilgrims went increasing more and more. The first Basilica became small.

It was necessary the construction of another temple, very larger, that could accommodate so many pilgrims. For initiative of missionary Redentoristas and of the Bishops, it had beginning on November 11, 1955 the construction of another church, current New Basilica, the "Larger Marian Sanctuary of the world". In 1980, still in construction, it was consecrated by Pope John Paul II and it received the title of Smaller Basilica. In 1984, the National Conference of the Bishops from Brazil (CNBB) he declared Aparecida's National Sanctuary Basilica officially.
